Jun 11, 2026 — Y Mountain is one of Provo’s signature hikes and a favorite workout for locals, with the enormous white “Y” serving as the turnaround point for most visitors. Towering above the letter is Y Mountain itself, a modest objective by Wasatch standards, but a worthwhile summit for a short outing with rewarding views over Provo and Utah Valley.

The Y Mountain Trail wasted no time gaining elevation, climbing at a respectably steep grade for such a popular hike via wide switchbacks with ever-improving views over Provo and Utah Valley. Each switchback is marked with motivational phrases. Before long I reached the giant white “Y,” where the crowds mostly called it a day. I kept going on the quieter Slide Canyon Trail, which wound through a shallow canyon lined with scrubby vegetation and occasional openings overlooking the valley below. At the junction with the upper Y Mountain Trail, I turned left and continued climbing through patches of forest and small meadows. Most hikers head to the western overlook, but the true high point lies on the eastern summit, so I followed the fainter path in that direction instead. The extra few minutes were worth it, with excellent views stretching toward Provo Peak, Kyhv Peak, and the surrounding Wasatch ridges.
