Snow Lake, the start of the hike. Thousand Lake Mountain is up there in the center somewhere.

Close-up of Snow Lake.

I wrapped around the north side of Snow Lake and started on the Snow Lake Trail.

Trail sign for Snow Lake Trail.

Steep ascent on a rocky trail.

View back.

At the top of the first steep section, I crossed an old forest road. The trail continued on the opposite side.

Along the Snow Lake Trail.

View back, a light break in the trees.

Ascending the second steep part.

View back.

Steep switchbacks, but only for a few hundred feet.

At the rim, view east.

Close-up east to the desert below.

On top of the rim, headed southwest toward the summit of Thousand Lake Mountain. There was no trail.

Wandering through forest and meadows. There's no one "best" way, but I recommend trying to stick to open terrain when possible to avoid having to hop over logs and forest detritus.

I emerged into an open area below the summit.

Approaching the rocky summit, just right of center.

Thousand Lake Mountain ahead. Minor Class 2 boulder-hopping to get there.

Thousand Lake Mountain, view back the way I came.
