Although I'd planned a bigger hike within Bryce Canyon National Park, snow detered me, but the result was a nice and lesser-visited (relatively) trail to Hat Shop, a name for an intriguing set of hoodoos. The “hats” atop the hoodoos are composed of a stronger type of rock which erodes more slowly than the softer stuff beneath. This contrast in erosion rates is what gives the hoodoos their unique shapes as wind and water carve away the landscape over time. The Under-the-Rim Trail extends from the Hat Shop for over 20 miles to Rainbow Point, but this was my turn-around point today.

The trail descends just over two miles, starting off from Bryce Point along a path shared with the much more popular Peekaboo Loop. At a junction, I headed to the right and descended away from the crowds. The trail becomes flatter for a time along a ridge, then winds around the head of a drainage before making its way to a thin ridgeline. I spotted the Hat Shop hoodoos on this ridge's southern side.
