Jun 16, 2026 — I’d already reached Mount Timpanogos and its many ridgeline summits on various outings, but had somehow neglected Elk Point and Roberts Horn, two minor peaks tucked away on the giant’s eastern flank. Although they’re overshadowed by one of Utah’s most iconic mountains, they provide an excellent excuse to revisit the spectacular Mount Timpanogos Trail, one of the Wasatch’s classic hikes.

The Mount Timpanogos Trail began at a gradual grade into Primrose Cirque, with both Elk Point and Roberts Horn visible on either side. The trail was well-maintained and even had sections covered in old pavement. It soon passed Timpanogos Falls, a popular destination for hikers not interested in continuing to the summit. Beyond the waterfall, the trail settled into a steady series of switchbacks through Primrose Cirque, where the massive north face of Mount Timpanogos gradually came into view. More switchbacks higher up led into Hidden Lakes Basin, where the trail flatted out a bit.

I left the Mount Timpanogos Trail and headed toward the saddle on the west side of Elk Point. It was a steep slog up a very steep grassy slope that had me clinging to clumps of dirt on the way back down later. From the saddle, Elk Point was an enjoyable Class 2 ridge walk with only a few patches of brush to weave around. The summit provided expansive views north along the Wasatch Alpine Ridge, while Mount Timpanogos towered just across the basin.

After retracing my steps to the trail, I continued toward Roberts Horn. The trail conveniently wrapped around to its southwest ridge, and I took a spur trail labeled “Toilet”. There was indeed a toilet hidden away up there, but anyone using it would have been in my full view as I made my way up the ridgeline. This was another straightforward Class 2 scramble along the ridgeline to a fantastic summit view into Primrose Cirque and beyond.
