Outdoor activities are dangerous

Hiking, scrambling, climbing, canyoneering and other backcountry activities carry serious risks, including injury, permanent disability and death. Hazards include, but aren’t limited to: falls, rockfall, exposure, flash floods, severe weather, heat, cold, altitude, wildlife, getting lost, equipment failure and your own errors in judgment. You alone are responsible for deciding whether an activity is within your ability, and for your own safety and the safety of anyone with you.

Information is for general reference only

Everything on Stav is Lost is based on my personal experience on a specific day, in specific conditions. That includes trip reports, routes, GPX tracks, maps, coordinates, photos, ratings, difficulty grades, time estimates and descriptions. Trails, roads, access, regulations and conditions change constantly. Information here may be incomplete, inaccurate or out of date the moment it’s published.

My ratings, including YDS grades, effort, beauty, personality and solitude, are subjective. They’re relative to other hikes on this site, not to any official standard. A route I describe as easy may be dangerous for you or under different conditions.

Nothing on this site is professional advice or instruction. It’s no substitute for proper training, experience, current conditions reports, official sources, navigation skills and sound judgment. There are much better resources for beginners than this site.

Do your own research

Before any trip, verify current conditions, closures, permits, fees, land-use rules and access with the relevant land management agency. Carry proper navigation, gear, food, water and emergency supplies, and tell someone your plans. Never rely solely on a GPX track or a phone. Turn around when conditions or your abilities call for it.

Respect the land

Some routes described here cross public lands with specific regulations, or areas near private property. You’re responsible for knowing and following all applicable laws, staying off private property without permission, and practicing Leave No Trace principles. Inclusion of a route on this site doesn’t mean it’s legal, open or appropriate to visit at any given time.
